Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that can build up in homes, posing serious health risks like lung cancer. In this case, the customer in Canon City, CO, noticed elevated radon levels in their new construction home, mainly due to an open and unsealed sump lid, along with cracked expansion joints throughout the unfinished basement. They chose Purple Mountain Radon for their expertise in handling radon issues in new homes. To mitigate the risk, our team sealed the cracked joints with polyurethane caulk, installed an airtight sump lid, and routed the exhaust piping toward the rear of the home to effectively reduce radon levels.

Professionally Installed Radon Mitigation Systems in Canon City, CO

Your qualified company for radon and indoor air quality services

What is radon?

Radon is an invisible, odorless, tasteless, radioactive gas that can pose a serious health risk at high levels. Radon gas comes from the natural breakdown of uranium found in soils, rock, and water in CO, and every state in the U.S. Canon City is in "Zone 1" with a potential for high radon levels (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency).

Why should you test for radon?

Radon can seep through the soil, into the air, and through cracks and openings in home foundations. Homes trap radon in living spaces, where it may build up to dangerous levels. The only way to know if your home has a radon problem is to test. Don't wait to find out if you've got a radon problem in your home. Job Stories From Canon City, CO
Radon Mitigation in Canon City, CO 81212
  1. Why they needed a radon mitigation system:
The customer required a radon mitigation system due to high radon levels in their new construction home. The presence of radon was a concern because it poses significant health risks, and the customer wanted to address it before the home was fully settled.

  2. Why the customer chose the company:
The customer selected Purple Mountain Radon because of the company's specialized expertise in dealing with radon in newly constructed homes and their ability to provide tailored, effective solutions for complex situations like theirs.

  3. What's causing the problem:
The high radon levels were primarily caused by an open, unsealed sump lid and cracked expansion joints throughout the unfinished basement. Additionally, there was no pump in the sump basin, which allowed radon to accumulate in the basement.

  4. How We Fixed the Problem (Mitigation Process):

    • Sealed cracked expansion joints with polyurethane caulk.
    • Installed an airtight sump lid to prevent radon from entering the home.
    • Ran the exhaust piping across the basement toward the rear of the home (as opposed to going up and out, since the sump basin was located at the front of the home).
  5. What's unique about this situation:
This situation is unique because it involved a new construction home with high radon levels. The open sump lid and cracked joints in the unfinished basement created a pathway for radon to enter, which required a customized mitigation plan to ensure the safety of the home and its future occupants.

Radon Mitigation in Canon City, CO

Canon City has hard soil under the slab. To help ensure we are able to reach the basement's furthest corners when we drill & excavate a suction point, we conduct a pressure field extension test (PFE). This tells us that the radon fan is capable of reaching to the furthest corners. When we are unable to establish good communication, a second suction point is necessary. Sometimes, with a finished basement, connecting both sides of the basement is difficult to do without visible & unsightly pipe. Here are two examples in Canon City.  One home required two separate systems while the other home, we were able to connect both suction points to the same fan.
